Healthy and Fun Sandwich Ideas

I’m huge on sandwiches.  I mean HUGE!  I started managing a cafe at 19, my parents friends took it over, then my parents actually bought it.  I’m a sandwich queen and picky.  However, over those years of being manager I’m also all about the pricepoint.  Sandwiches can cost expensive by adding items to them out of the norm.

My latest little obsession is to flavor some mayo.  I’m using other items in my pantry or fridge so it’s no extra money out of the budget.  Try these great ideas below to create incredible sandwiches at your house.

Sometimes we can get stuck in a sandwich rut! You can really only eat turkey and cheese sandwiches so many ways, right? Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches can only get you so far, so what do you do then? Think outside the box, sky is the limit to which sandwich toppings you can add in and white bread isn’t the only thing that you can use to put your sandwiches together. Your sandwiches can take on a whole new spin, while still being healthy. For example, why can’t you put all your salad fixing right into a pita and there you have your healthy salad, right in a pocket – no fork needed! Here are some other quick and healthy ways to change up the same old sandwich routine.

Breads

Whole-grain varieties of bagels, muffins and tortillas all make for a fun change when it comes to putting your sandwiches together. Pitas have “pockets” and are ideal for sandwiches, especially for tuna. You can even select different varieties of breads, such as whole-grain baguettes, or whole-grain flat breads. Just by alternating the bread part of sandwiches, your lunch has gotten an instant makeover!

Toppings

Depending what type of sandwiches you’ll be making, will determine which toppings you think would compliment your sandwich. Here is a quick list of delicious add-ins:

Apples
Avocados
Cucumbers
Grapes
Lettuce
Pears
Peppers (try roasted red peppers)
Spinach leaves
Tomatoes

Condiments

Who says you just have to use mustard or mayonnaise on sandwiches? There are a lot of spreads that can be used to keep your sandwich together. Some on the list may actually even surprise you a bit.

Fruit Preserves
Honey Mustard
Horseradish
Hummus
Pesto sauce
Salsa
Tartar Sauce

Perfect Combinations

Now, we are already to put our masterpiece together! Here are a few perfect sandwich combinations to you get inspired to change up your same old sandwich routine:

Grilled Chicken with Pesto and Arugula on Ciabatta Bread
Turkey and Provolone Wrap with Avocado and Tomato
Tomato, Mozzarella, Basil on a Whole-grain Baguette
Tuna Salad Pita Pockets (try shredding carrots and finely chopped celery into the tuna)
Ham and Swiss with Baby Spinach using Honey Mustard on a Whole-grain Bagel
Be creative and remember sandwiches do not have to be boring! When you can combine various textures when building your sandwich, not only will it feel like you are eating something special, but you will also feel fuller. Because when you add in shredded carrots, cucumbers, apples, grapes or pears it adds fiber to your lunch and therefore will not leave you hungry a few hours later. Remember, lunch is what gets you through the rest of your day. Make what you eat count and try and sneak as many fruits and vegetables either into your sandwich or even on the side. Happy Eating!
