This year I decided to make a lifestyle change rather than go on a “diet.” I always seem to fail at diets and I just feel worse than when I started. Eating healthy can often feel overwhelming but I’ve been learning new ways to get healthy.
I love keeping up on all the popular health news and one recent article was talking about cleaning out the bathroom cabinets to see what vitamins are there and to ensure the dates are good. In doing so I started thinking about how there is a supplement for nearly everything and I take many of them. From Green coffee beans to fish oil and raspberry ketone to cinnamon which helps with blood sugar and even a garlic supplement that helps with high cholesterol.
To that end, the question soon became what items could I swap out for healthier choices while cooking and eating? Changes that would be long lasting and result in a positive long-term reward. So below are some short cuts that you too may find helpful if you are hoping to shed some calories and get healthier.
Healthy Recipe Swaps
If a recipe calls whole milk, instead use fat-free or low-fat milk
If a recipe calls for butter, instead use margarine or and this is one of my favorites, use marshmallow crème (this is especially good for making frosting). Applesauce is also a good substitute for butter.
If a recipe calls for 1 egg, instead use 2 egg whites
If a recipe calls for chocolate chunks, instead use mini chocolate chips
If a recipe calls for heavy cream, instead use evaporated milk
If a recipe calls for seasoning salts, instead use fresh herbs whenever possible
If a recipe calls for whole flour, use whole wheat flour
If a recipe calls for sugar, instead use applesauce. Vanilla is also a good replacement for sugar.
Smart Food Swaps
Opt for mustard over mayonnaise
Opt for ground turkey or chicken over ground beef
Opt for lemon juice over tartar sauce
Opt for yogurt or cottage cheese instead of sour cream
Opt for mozzarella cheese over cheddar cheese
Opt for natural peanut butter over reduced-fat peanut butter
Opt for brown rice over white rice
Opt for zucchini ribbons or spaghetti squash over pasta
Opt for mashed cauliflower over mashed potatoes (one of my favorites!)
Opt for lettuce wraps over tortillas
Healthy Snack Swaps
Instead of chocolate cookies, opt for vanilla wafers
Instead of carrot cake, opt for ginger cookies
Instead of potato chips, opt for kale chips
Instead of buttered popcorn, opt for air-popped
Instead of regular potato chips, opt for baked potato chips
Instead of ice cream, opt for non-fat frozen yogurt
Instead of pudding, opt for sugar-free applesauce
Whether you are looking for a healthy snack or to make a healthy mean, the list of healthy swaps is limitless and it becomes easier once your mindset is in place. Little changes can lead to big differences when it becomes a new way of life, but first you have to start with a new way of thinking.
