Before my husband and I were married, the two of us decided to do what you might call a family tradition. We make up two batches or more of hot apple cider. Sure hot apple cider really isn’t that big of a deal to make . But the way that we do it is so much better than the store bought powder stuff. And just as easy to make a glass up later.
Here is what you’ll need to make it:
- 2 gallons of apple cider
- 2 gallons of apple juice
- a package of cinnamon sticks
- 1 tsp whole cloves
- a bottle of inexpensive vodka – optional
Take a big pot and pour in both juices and spices. Let it simmer for a minimum of 2 hours to cook some of the liquid out. It makes the house smell great for the holidays. Wish somehow I could make candles with the smell, it is awesome!!! Once it has simmered down, we set it aside to cool for about 20 minutes or we add it to our coffee cup. Straining the spices out before adding it to our cups
If you would like to spike your hot apple cider, merely add a shot (less or more to your taste) to the cup and pour the cider over. Then each person can decide how much goes in it for them.
After the cider cools completely, we put it back in the gallon containers and put it in the fridge. Drinking within 2 weeks is recommended, but it really doesn’t last long in our house. My kids love to drink it cold sometimes and my husband will drink it instead of coffee in the morning. It’s great to warm up on a cold morning.
We like to make it year round, but it is definitely a holiday favorite. It is a great way to warm up during the winter months. And it is a nice, inexpensive evening drink to help you relax and get a good nights rest.
