My kids have been in the kitchen since they were itty bitty. Like many Momma’s I’d have the high chair right there close while cooking and give them stuff to “prepare” if possible. You know, measuring cups with Cheerios in them, things like that. lol
Growing up I can remember being in the kitchen a lot. My Mom also had all her grandkids in the there. She had them using knives well before I was ready. BUT, at the same age I learned to responsibly use knives under extreme supervision.
My daughter is my oldest and loves to bake and cook on occasion. She can make just about anything because she’s not afraid to research a recipe. But she also loves to toss things together.
My son has been a lot slower to the cooking scene. His brain just works differently, oh so differently. He reads a recipe and gets it jumbled up because he reads the whole recipe at once. I’ve worked with him to go step by step. Same with directions on the back of boxes. You should have seen the mess in this house when he cooked a tv dinner when he was much younger. Oh my, poor guy is never living it down.
However, he could be the chef that ends up putting all of us to shame. He doesn’t go research a recipe. He just starts opening cupboards and sniffing spices. To me the concoctions are creepy and freaky but they end up working. He writes them down too. He’s got jojo potatoes and thinner french fries down to a science. Homefries too, he likes to make potatoes.
I don’t have the kids help in the kitchen as much as I should. Typically if hubby and I are making up new dishes they are at school or busy doing something on the weekend. I really need to remember to have the youngest come out to learn how to make some more basics. I can’t have him going off to college one day and only know how to make potatoes and macaroni and cheese. 🙂
Do your kids have anything special they like to prepare in the kitchen?
Never worry about what's for dinner again. I've got you covered with the meal plans in the Once a Week Cooking Club. Cook once, eat all week.
