During most of this year I have been battling my weight. I have been working on losing the pounds that seem insistent on staying perched upon my hips no matter how many carbs I limit from my daily intake; sigh. But, with the holidays fast approaching I need a plan to stay on some sort of healthy mission so that the pounds I did manage to set free, stay gone. And that, naturally, started with organizing the kitchen.
This whole kitchen reconstruction came about after a comment that I recently made. See, I have the tendency to wear a lot of black clothing and as such I’m often teased about it. But, when someone recently asked me if I was in mourning and my reply was, “Yes, I’m mourning my weight,” I started to laugh but it is fairly accurate. Which indicated it is time to take action and extreme measures.
Part of organizing consisted of making a big box of food that was still good and fresh but donating it to a local food pantry. As I briefly mentioned, I’ve been trying to follow a low carb diet and therefore I don’t need most of the food left in my cupboards.
The other part was rearranging the foods that were left. I separated the kids’ sugary snacks from my healthy snacks so that they are out of sight, out of mind and therefore the temptation is eliminated. It may sound silly but sometimes it’s something so simple such as hiding the snacks that makes it easier to avoid them.
I also went through all my Tupperware and plastic containers and discarded the ones that were old and stained or missing lids. Although, I recently found these plastic saran wrap lids that you can put over your leftovers that are sheer greatness and found right at the Dollar Tree, which means less clutter and affordable too.
I recently moved into a new home and one of my most favorite features is that I now have a lazy susan turntable in four of the cabinets in my kitchen. This one feature has made organizing that much easier. If you don’t know the beauty of having a lazy susan turntable, consider getting one installed. There is less clutter and it’s easier to sort things out. I have one for my cleaning products while another is for spices (as you can see in the photo) and yet another is just for my tea collection.
Lastly I bought a cloth holder that is used for storing the many plastic bags I bring home weekly so that I can now store them neatly rather than consuming the bottom of the pantry floor. Simple adjustments made for more room and less clutter.
What do you do to organize your kitchen, especially with the holidays near?
